POPLAR, MONTANA
Wiley assisted an environmental engineering firm with a Phase II Environmental Investigation in Poplar, Montana. The purpose of this project was to delineate the nature and extent of hydrocarbon impacts to soil and groundwater as the result of oil & gas exploration and development in the region. Wiley used hollow stem augers and direct push drilling methods to advance approximately 140 boreholes to approximately 60 feet below ground surface for this project. Approximately 60 of these boreholes were completed as groundwater monitoring wells. This project was unique in that the boreholes were advanced into a confining aquifer resulting in difficult drilling conditions due to running sands.
Additionally, the soil cuttings were heavily impacted with free phase hydrocarbon product, which needed to be containerized and disposed of.
